Stomachaches and Diarrhoea: What Causes Them and When to See a Doctor in Singapore

Stomachaches and Diarrhoea

Almost everyone experiences tummy troubles now and then. While most cases are mild, it’s important to know:

  • What’s causing the symptoms
  • What to do at home
  • When it’s safer to see a doctor

Let’s break it down.

What Causes Stomachaches and Diarrhoea

One of the most common causes is gastroenteritis (also known as the stomach flu). This is usually due to an infection, typically viral, though it can also be bacterial or parasitic.

Other possible causes include:

  • Food poisoning from contaminated food or water
  • Food intolerances, such as lactose intolerance
  • Overeating or consuming very spicy, oily, or rich food
  • Stress or anxiety, which can affect your gut
  • Digestive conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

In most cases, symptoms resolve on their own in a few days.

What You Can Do at Home

While your body recovers, the main goal is to prevent dehydration:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
    • Water, clear soups, or oral rehydration solutions (ORS) if diarrhoea is significant
  • Eat small, light meals when you feel ready
    • Soft foods like porridge, bananas, toast or boiled potatoes
  • Rest as much as possible
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and very fatty or spicy foods until you feel better

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Diarrhoea lasting more than 2–3 days
  • Severe or increasing abdominal pain
  • High fever (above 38°C)
  • Vomiting that prevents you from keeping fluids down
  • Blood or mucus in stool
  • Signs of dehydration: dry mouth, dizziness, minimal urine

How to Prevent Tummy Troubles

Here’s how to protect your digestive health, especially in Singapore’s warm and humid climate:

  • Wash hands regularly
  • Drink clean, filtered water,
  • Handle and store food properly
  • Refrigerate leftovers and avoid leaving food out for too long
  • Be cautious with raw or undercooked meat and seafood
  • Eat mindfully and manage stress when possible
