
Newborn to 1 Month: Early Senses Awakening
In the first month, babies mostly sleep and feed, but development is already underway.
Typical milestones:
- Recognises parents’ voices
- Startles at loud sounds
- Opens eyes and follows movement briefly
- May try lifting head during tummy time
2 to 3 months: More Awareness & Head Control
Your baby starts responding more to the world.
Milestones to look for:
- Lifts head and chest during tummy time
- Brings hands together
- Smiles in response to familiar faces
- Begins gentle cooing and vocal play
4 to 6 Months: Growing Strength and Social Smiles

As babies approach 4-6 months, their physical strength, movements and personality will blossom.
Common developments:
- Sits with support; may sit briefly unaided
- Pushes up with straight arms
- Grasps and transfers toys
- Laughs, babbles, and expresses excitement
- May show stranger anxiety
7 to 9 Months: On the Move

Between seven and nine months, babies’ motor skills will leap forward as they become more mobile.
What to expect:
- Sits steadily without support
- Crawls, scoots, or rolls
- Pulls to stand using furniture
- Uses pincer grasp to pick up small items
- Responds to name, plays peek-a-boo
- Understands basic words like “no” or “bye-bye”
10-12 Months: First Steps and First Words

As your baby nears their first birthday, they will become even more interactive.
Look out for:
- Takes first steps with help; some walk unaided
- Says simple words like “mama” or “papa”
- Points to show interest
- Waves goodbye, turns board book pages
- Shows separation anxiety
13-18 Months: Independence Grows

By 18 months, most toddlers are more confident in movement and communication.
Expected skills:
- Walks independently, may begin to run or climb
- Stacks blocks, uses spoon or cup with help
- Understands simple instructions
- Uses 10+ words, points to familiar objects/body parts
- Shows affection, imitates adults, asserts preferences (“mine!”)
When to Check with Your Doctor
All children grow at their own pace, and missing a milestone isn’t always a concern. However, you may want to speak to your doctor if your child:
- Isn’t meeting multiple milestones over time
- Shows loss of previously acquired skills
- Doesn’t respond to sounds, voices, or facial expressions
