Why Childhood Vaccinations Are So Important
Children’s immune systems are still developing, which makes them more vulnerable to infections. Vaccines work by safely “training” their immune system to recognise and fight off germs before they cause illness.
Staying on schedule with vaccines:
- Protects your child from preventable diseases
- Helps protect others in the community, including infants and those who can’t be vaccinated
- Reduces the spread of outbreaks in schools and childcare settings
The National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) in Singapore
The NCIS outlines all routine childhood vaccines recommended at specific ages. These include protection against:
- Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
- Diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and tetanus
- Hepatitis B
- Polio
- Pneumococcal disease
- HPV (for older children)
Planning Travel? Extra Vaccines May Be Needed

Common vaccines for children:
Vaccine | Purpose |
Hepatitis A | From contaminated food or water |
Typhoid | Also from food or water in lower-sanitation areas |
Influenza | Annual vaccine - especially important during flu season |
Meningococcal | Prevents serious baterial infections |
Japanese Encephalitis | For rural parts of Asia |
Yellow Fever | Required for entry to some African/South American countries |
Rabies | For trips where contact with animals is likely |
Tip: Aim to get travel vaccines 4 – 6 weeks before your trip for full protection.
