What Is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is a lung infection that causes inflammation in the air sacs of one or both lungs. These air sacs may fill with fluid or pus, which can affect your ability to breathe and reduce oxygen levels in the body.
It can be caused by:
- Bacteria (the most common type in adults)
- Viruses (common in children and younger adults)
- Fungi (less common, usually in those with weaker immune systems)
Symptoms of Pneumonia
Watch out for these symptoms in both adults and children:
- Persistent cough, sometimes with mucus or phlegm
- Fever and chills
- Chest pain, especially when breathing deeply or coughing
- Shortness of breath or rapid breathing
- Fatigue or low energy
- Poor appetite
Some people, especially young children or older adults, may show different signs:
- Confusion or changes in mental alertness
- Lower-than-normal body temperature
- Sudden tiredness or lethargy
- Vomiting or diarrhoea in children
- Fast breathing or signs of irritability in toddlers
Why Early Treatment Matters
Delaying a visit to your GP clinic could increase your risk of complications. Left untreated, pneumonia can lead to:
- Worsening lung infection
- Difficulty breathing or low oxygen levels
- The need for hospitalisation, especially for seniors or those with chronic conditions
Getting checked early at a CHAS clinic or GP in Singapore helps to:
- Confirm if the symptoms are due to pneumonia, flu, bronchitis or other issues
- Start treatment promptly, such as antibiotics or antivirals
- Lower the risk of further complications and speed up recovery
How to Reduce Your Risk of Pneumonia
To protect yourself and your family:
- Stay up to date with vaccinations like the pneumococcal and flu vaccine
- Practise good hand hygiene, especially after coughing or using the toilet
- Avoid smoking, as it weakens lung defences
- Eat a balanced diet and stay physically active to support your immune system
